Inauguration of the research and development center for soil-borne diseases in Ankara

Soil-borne diseases include types of root rot, wilting, yellowing and dwarfing caused by pathogens such as fungi, bacteria, viruses and nematodes, which cause a reduction of 50 to 75 crops. Soil-borne diseases (SBP) are a serious threat to Turkey's food security, especially in the climate of high temperature and heavy rainfall. It is the first of its kind in the West Central Asia and North Africa (CWANA) region, dedicated to advancing research on soil-borne diseases and developing innovative solutions to control and prevent their spread. CIMMYT is signing a cooperation agreement with this international institution to facilitate knowledge exchange and technology transfer to support joint research and development activities aimed at improving the health and productivity of products. This cooperation is a great opportunity for the Turkish seed industry to maintain its competitive advantage in foreign markets. Thirty-five researchers and technicians work in this center. This center will act as an umbrella for all the research of soil-borne diseases in Turkey. Khakzad disease program in CIMMYT is to provide high-yielding wheat germplasm resistant to these diseases.
